The Department
About Us
The Department of Hygiene and Epidemiology is part of the University of Porto Medical School and has a long tradition in providing the teaching of epidemiology and public health to medical students. Recently, its activities were broadened to reach students with different backgrounds through the cooperation with other schools, professional organisations and public health authorities.

An undergraduate course in Epidemiology is followed each year by 200 medical students and carries 4 credits (one credit being equivalent to 20 hours).

Graduate teaching takes place within the framework of different Master Programs of the University, particularly the Public Health Master Program, jointly launched by the Medical School and the Institute of Biomedical Sciences. Courses offered are: Fundamentals of Epidemiology, Advanced Epidemiological Methods, Principles of Public Health and Methods of Epidemiological Investigation and Data-Analysis, Perinatal epidemiology and Hospital Epidemiology.

Research grants are obtained from Governamental agencies and research founds such as Fundação Ciência e Tecnologia or Comissão de Fomento da Investigação em Cuidados de Saúde and from international agencies such as those of the European Union.

The research work in this department is developed in close cooperation with other Medical School departments, particularly in clinical epidemiology investigation, and has on-going projects with departments of different hospitals and primary care centres. Currently, a large population based study is under way, to assemble a cohort of adolescents and a cohort of adults, residents of Porto, to investigate risk factors for, and to study the frequency and risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
